Activities

Activities

The main purpose of GoTeach is to foster the empowerment and employability of young people from challenged socio-economic backgrounds.

Employees of DPDHL Group volunteer and dedicate time to mentor the young people in their transition to the working world. They seek to inspire and motivate the young people to prepare their first professional steps, by means of sharing their own professional and personal experiences. Varieties of activities are organized throughout the year, which can widely vary depending on the circumstances and the needs of the youth in the specific countries. Some examples of activities may include workshops and training sessions, internships, camp-style activities, career fairs, mentorships and traineeships. In 2015, GoTeach initiated as well activities focusing on education in emergencies and reaching out to young refugees.

As described in our core framework allows for a targeted and a more personalized approach to building sustainability. This means each country is encouraged to take their own path in planning the activities that are best suited to the needs of the youth in the local area. In order to accomplish this, a needs assessment is conducted with the young people.

Deutsche Post DHL Group volunteers get involved in various ways, depending on local conditions, local needs, and the options available. They can act as mentors, lead workshops or camps, supervise internships in various parts of the company, or conduct tours of the workplace. The duration of their engagement varies according to activity. While workshops might last just a single day, camps can be over several days, and internships can last up to half a year.  All formats give participating young people the chance to familiarize themselves with the world of work, often for the first time. Young participants also get a chance to learn how to create a CV, and how to handle themselves in a job interview or other working-world situations.

Research (Motivated to achieve, UK, 2019, https://www.educationandemployers.org/new-report-published-motivated-to-achieve/) shows that encounters with employers like participation in career talks with volunteers from the world of work can have a huge positive impact and that the number of employer contacts that a young person experience in school matter. The 7% of young people surveyed who recalled four or more activities while at school were five times less likely to be not in education, employment or training (NEET) and earned, on average, 16% more than peers who recalled no such activities.
